Ink Pump and Capping Station Failures: Symptoms and Fixes

Two parts sit between your printhead and a clean start every morning: the capping station, which seals the head when it is idle, and the ink pump, which pulls ink through the head during cleaning. When either fails, the printer behaves as though the head is dying – and operators replace the head when the real fault was a part that costs a fraction as much.

What Each Part Does

  • Capping station. When the carriage parks, the cap lifts against the nozzle plate and seals the head. It keeps air out so the ink does not dry, and it provides the chamber the pump pulls suction from.
  • Ink pump. A peristaltic pump with a soft tube. During cleaning, it draws ink from the head, through the cap, and out to the waste bottle. The tube deforms against rollers thousands of times, and eventually it flattens or splits.

Symptoms, and Which Part Is Guilty

Symptom Likely cause
Cleaning cycles no longer recover nozzles Pump tube worn flat (no suction), or cap not sealing
No ink moves in the waste line during a cleaning cycle Pump failure or a blocked waste tube
Head dries out overnight even after cleaning Cap not sealing – hardened rim, worn lift, ink crust on the seal
Ink pooling in the cap after cleaning Blocked waste line into the waste bottle
Missing nozzles on one colour only Often a cap that is not level rather than a head fault
Ink smears around the head after parking Cap contaminated or misaligned

Diagnosis in Three Checks

  1. Watch the waste line. Run a cleaning cycle and watch the tube going to the waste bottle. If ink does not move, suction is not reaching the head – the fault is downstream of the head. That is good news.
  2. Inspect the cap. Look at the seal rim. It should be soft and clean. Crusted ink, a hardened rim or a cap that sits unevenly all break the seal.
  3. Inspect the pump tube. Remove the pump cover and look at the tube where the rollers squeeze it. A flattened, cracked or swollen tube has lost its ability to pump.

What To Replace

  • Pump assembly or pump tube. If the tube is worn, replace it – and check the waste line for dried blockages at the same time.
  • Cap top and seal. These are consumables. Replace them on schedule rather than when they fail; a cap costs a tiny fraction of what it protects.
  • Wiper. If you are already inside the capping station, replace the wiper. It is the cheapest part in the area and it directly affects nozzle recovery.
  • Waste sponge and bottle. If the waste path is contaminated, clear it entirely.

Prevention

Treat the capping station as a scheduled consumable, not a repair. Clean the cap rim weekly, replace the cap top every three to six months of production depending on your cleaning frequency, and replace the wiper at the same time. Add the pump to your annual preventive maintenance list – pumps rarely fail suddenly, they fade.

FAQ

How do I know the problem is not the printhead?

If ink does not move in the waste line during a cleaning cycle, the fault is upstream of the head. Fix suction first, then judge the head. Our printhead replacement guide covers the decision.

How long does an ink pump last?

It depends on how much cleaning the machine does. Machines that clean often wear pumps faster. Inspect the tube during routine maintenance rather than waiting for a fault.

Can a bad cap top really dry out a printhead overnight?

Yes. With an eco-solvent ink and a poor seal, ink inside the nozzles can start to dry within hours. This is the most common preventable cause of a clogged head.

Replacement Parts

We supply ink pumps, capping station and cap top parts, wipers, valves and waste ink sponges for Mimaki, Roland, Mutoh, Epson and Chinese eco-solvent machines. Tell us your model through the contact form and we will confirm the correct assembly.
